Overview

Overview

A cupsleeve event (CSE) is a fan-run event held at cafés or boba shops, usually to celebrate a franchise or celebrity through themed experiences and merchandise. As a co-organizer, I helped conceptualize and execute the Krisis: On Stage Cupsleeve Event, inspired by the NIJISANJI EN VTuber group, Krisis.

Hosted at Sunright Tea Studio - Irvine Jeffrey, we reimagined the members of Krisis as a rock band. We designed original band-themed outfits and instruments for each character, extending this concept across all visual assets and merchandise. The event attracted 120+ in-person attendees, produced $1000+ in merchandise sales, and was recognized by Krisis themselves.

Character Design

As the primary character designer, I led the early-stage creative development, working through multiple theme ideas before finalizing the cohesive band concept. While the event was originally planned to be a summer theme, I guided the team through an iterative ideation process that ultimately resulted in a band-inspired concept, which resonated strongly with the organizers, artists, and our audience.

Designing the visual identity and characters also required extensive research and iteration. I explored a wide range of references to inform my character design direction, and refined multiple versions before arriving at the final designs. We focused the outfits to be primarily monochromatic, with pops of yellow and purple, which was the color palette that we determined for the event branding. These characters served as the mascots for our event, and the designs were used in all of the merchandise and other graphics.

Using Adobe Illustrator, I also created the band logo, an edgy and symmetrical graphic that reads the band name, "Krisis," to fit with the rock band idea. The logo appears in various forms in each band member's outfit design, as seen below.

Merchandise Design

As the art and production lead, I worked with our co-organizer and a team of 12 local fan-artists to create various photocards, stickers, and prints focused on the Krisis: On Stage character designs that I had created in the initial stages of event planning. I organized references for artists, blending the edgier, rock band theme with Krisis's lively, cartoonish energy for a balanced dichotomy. Finally, I maintained communication between and among artists, coordinators, and manufacturers to ensure production accuracy and print quality.

Menu Design

Given Sunright Tea Studio's drinks, toppings, and ingredients, I worked with my co-organizer and the store manager to come up with four event-exclusive drinks, with three drinks each representing a different member, and one drink to represent the whole band.

Using images provided by Sunright as well as artworks by one of our team's artists, I created a menu graphic adhering to the livelier side of our event theme. This graphic was posted online, distributed at the event, and featured on the in-store ordering kiosks.

Marketing

In addition to my design and organizational roles, I was also in charge of curating our social media. As the NIJISANJI EN community focuses on X (formerly known as Twitter), we primarily marketed our event on X.

Based on our initial interest check responses and engagement, we expected approximately 60-70 attendees on the day of the event. However, as a result of my continuous promotion through themed graphic design and scheduled releases of artist/vendor, activity, menu, and merchandise information, we nearly doubled our engagement as the event approached, and 120+ fans attended on the event day.

Impact and Future Development

Our main goal when planning this event was to create a safe and fun space for fans to gather and bond over shared interests. As the NIJISANJI EN/Krisis fan community focuses on small, tight-knit engagement, we made sure that there were plenty of activities for fans to bond over on-site. This included playing Krisis and NIJISANJI EN original music videos and streams for fans to sing and follow along with, fan-favorite vendors in an open space on the patio, message board areas for fans to write letters to Krisis, and photocard decorating stations. We encouraged attendees to post their photos and videos with the #KrisisOnStage on X, and received many positive comments.

Krisis: On Stage was my first experience organizing a cupsleeve event, and was a foundational project in developing my skills in concept development, design iteration, and team leadership. This event strengthened my coordination and teamwork skills, especially in regards to creative teams. The lessons I gained directly informed my approach to future projects, including the Alien Stage University Cupsleeve Event, where I applied the knowledge I gained from Krisis: On Stage, onto an even larger project scope.

Notes

All of our event materials were produced and distributed in compliance with NIJISANJI EN and ANYCOLOR's derivative work policy.
